Grand Rapids teen faces murder, felony charges after fatal shooting

A Grand Rapids teen accused of a fatal shooting turned himself in to police Friday.

Kent County Prosecutor's Office issued a two-count felony warrant for open murder and felony firearm on the 17-year-old. Police said he turned himself in on April 9, 2021, and was taken into custody at the Kent County Correctional Facility.

Nicholas Stephan Purnell, 28, of Grand Rapids, died from a gunshot in the 100 block of Madison Avenue, police said.

Police ruled the death a homicide.
